Ferruccio Maierna
Ferruccio Maierna is a sculptor born in Amsterdam in 1969; he lived in Brussels during his formative years and later moved to Italy, to Rome to be precise, where he currently lives and works. The influences he absorbed at the Belgian academies – the Ecole des arts d’Ixelles and the Anderlecht Academy – drew him to metal, which has become the preferred material of his sculptures: since 2015 his art has focused on reinterpreting oil drums and tins, which have become his favourite means of expression. Conceptually close to the creativity of recycling and reuse, the chosen material is worked entirely by hand through a range of processes, some more rudimentary, others more sophisticated: compression, rolling, stretching… These are the key words that define the work of the sculptor Ferruccio Maierna. Thanks to the visibility gained through numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad – Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland – Maierna has been involved in the design and production of furnishing accessories – lamps, tables, jewellery boxes, stools – and of other fashion projects, including a capsule collection for the Gianni Bravo brand, for which he created the outer covering of the shoe heels. Selected by an international jury, he took part in the thirtieth edition of Miniartextil at the Pinacoteca Civica in Como. In April 2021, commissioned by Italia Yachts, he made the trophy for the third edition of the Coppa dei Campioni at Punta Ala, in the province of Grosseto, a regional offshore sailing championship. Over the course of his career as a sculptor Ferruccio Maierna has received many awards and accolades; the most recent dates from 2017, the “Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition” held in the United States.
